This morning, my six-year-old daughter had a dentist appointment.  She went in a bit nervous and came out asking when she could go back again!

First of all, this is in no way against healthcare in Tuscaloosa because there are a number of outstanding practices here, but I will NEVER take my daughter to another dentist until the quality of their care diminishes.  I found this office through my insurance provider's website.  The business not only gave me the most benefit according to my plan, but their approval rating was extremely high. So, I decided to give it a try.  I'm so happy I did.

For starters, I was impressed with the attention to detail in their office.  I noticed the bright, welcoming colors, the pictures of children on the walls, and even the fact that the "tables" and stools matched. After being involved with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital for so many years, I pay particular attention to facilities that cater to children. The first thing that caught my eye was that the counters had two heights: one for adults and the other for the children to be included, as they're the actual patients.

I also took note of their state-of-the-art equipment and how they spoke to Jireh.  Talking to her and telling her what to do instead of "Mom, have her to sit...." seemed to make her more comfortable.

She really enjoyed getting her teeth cleaned.  The hygienist asked what flavor toothpaste she wanted.  I expected the usual: cherry, grape, watermelon, bubblegum... When she said "cupcake," Jireh lit up! That was certainly her choice.

Following her cleaning and other care, the doctor came and gave a very thorough examination.  She asked questions about things I'd put on her new patient information sheet and told me some other things she noticed. For instance, she said Jireh is doing a great job brushing, flossing, etc.  She has no cavities. However, there was some concern of erosion as a possible result of acid reflux.

That might sound scary to some, but it was comforting to me because it showed me that she really paid attention to detail. Definitely what you want to know as a parent.

Once the exam was complete, the hygienist led us to a prize machine. They'd given Jireh a token to get a treat on the way out.  When we made it outside, Jireh said, "I LOVE that place.  We should come here more often!"

I don't think I've ever heard anyone say they love going to the dentist and want to go more regularly.

If you have a child(ren) and are looking for a good dentist, be sure to check with your insurance company for suggestions.  If Pediatric Smiles in Bessemer is mentioned, make no reservations about it! GO!
