Rising Fuel Prices: Where to Find Low-Cost Gas in West Alabama

I’ll be honest; the jump in gas prices just hit me. Don’t roll your eyes at me but I drive a Prius and hadn’t had the need to fill up until this past weekend.

Now, I'm rolling my eyes at the prices.

I knew prices were creeping up but we are now past $3 a gallon. To put it in perspective, last May, we were well over $4 per gallon. So, let’s hope we are not headed in that direction again.

According to AAA, the “national average price for a gallon of regular gas is $3.601.” Which still puts Alabama below average as our state is in the “3.307 and 3.127” gas price range.

Why the Sudden Surge?

“OPEC’s announcement last weekend that it will cut production by over a million barrels per day starting in a month took the oil market by surprise,” said AAA. “In response, crude immediately surged well above $80 a barrel, although it has since struggled to stay above that mark.”

Will Gas Prices Go Down Soon?

The short answer is no.

An AAA spokesperson, Andrew Gross said that the “oil market has had a few days to digest the OPEC news and speculate about the reason. This has led to the price of oil stabilizing for now.” However, “the cost of oil accounts for more than 50% of what we pay at the pump, so drivers may not catch a break at the pump any time soon.”
