Saying Thank You Matters

It is always lovely to hear the phrase, “Thank you.” However, I have found that people say this simple phrase less and less. Today is National Thank You Day and let this be a reminder to say “thank you” to someone not just today but 365 days of the year.

I adore sending handwritten thank-you notes to others as an expression of my gratitude. I learned this from my mother. She would sit me down to write out thank you cards for birthday gifts, fancy dinners with my Grandmother, and to anyone that deserved an extra lift in their day. Listen, I was the kid that would be running out of the house early in the morning to meet the garbage collection folks with a bag of cookies and a thank you note.

We often work in thankless jobs. Therefore, when someone says a simple thank you to me, it makes my day. I genuinely feel appreciated when this happens. I encourage you to say “thank you” not only on its official holiday but every day. Trust me; it goes a long way.

There is a benefit of saying thank you; it is an expression of gratitude. According to HuffPost, “gratitude is the simplest, most powerful way to acknowledge another person’s value and humanity.” Huffpost also offers “three reasons why kindness and gratitude are imperative to business success.”

• Higher self-esteem leads to greater confidence

Some would argue the point that saying “thank you” is merely good manners. As we all have found out, not everyone has good manners. But it's also one of the most important ways in which we interact with others, both those closest to us and those with whom we have a contact for the briefest of times.’
