Stillman College Announces September ‘Alabama Speaks’ Series

As part of its yearlong 150^th Anniversary celebration, Stillman College invites the public to its Alabama Speaks Series on September 15 and October 8, held in the Stillman College Art Gallery, located directly behind the Hay Center.

Stillman College President Dr. Yolanda W. Page commissioned the Alabama Speaks lecture series as part of the College’s 150th Anniversary celebration. Organized by Dr. Allison Upshaw, Interim Director of Interdisciplinary Studies and Harte Honors College and Associate Professor of Music, and Dr. Larry Kreiser, Associate Professor of History, the series features historians, scholars, and thought leaders who explore Alabama’s rich history and its impact on the nation.

The September Alabama Speaks event will feature Dr. Howard Robinson, Assistant Professor of History and University Historian at Alabama State University, who will present “Student Activism and the Long Civil Rights Movement.” This series dives into the “vital role young people, particularly college students, played in advancing equality in modern America,” said the press release.

Dr. Gordon Govens, Associate Professor and Executive Director of Faith-Based and Social Justice Initiatives/Thriving Congregations Lilly Grant, will moderate.

With a focus on African American history, Robinson has written extensively about the student protest movement of the 1960s. He also collaborates with the National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African-American Culture.
