The Birth Of My First Child: It Was a Crazy 4 Days
The Birth Of My First Child: It Was a Crazy 4 Days
My son was born back home in Orlando, Florida and it was a huge journey. Labor lasted longer than expected. His due date was my birthday, but like most birth stories, it didn't go exactly as planned.
We had 2 major scares before the birth of my son. About a month before his due date at the baby shower, Braxton Hicks contractions were at their height. Braxton Hicks contractions are basically how mom's body gets ready for labor. According to What To Expect, Braxton Hicks contractions are the "uterine muscles are flexing in preparation for the big job they'll have to do in the near future."
The official due date was my birthday on February 4th. About 2 weeks before that date, my wife had t leave work early and we thought she was really in labor. At this point, I'm still here in Tuscaloosa working and was thinking of how quickly I could get to Orlando for the birth of my son. Would it be quicker to find a flight, drive to Birmingham and fly to Orlando, or would it be easier to drive 9 hours from Tuscaloosa to Orlando? Luckily it was a false alarm, but it meant we were that much closer to the real labor.
I was only able to get a certain amount of time off of work, so we had to strategically pick a day for me to come to Orlando. I decided to drive 2 days before the actual due date, not knowing if my son would be born on his due date, before or after. I arrived in Orlando and active labor began just a few days later.
I could go into detail about how labor lasted 4 days, and the umbilical cord was wrapped around my son's neck in the womb, but I'll save it. Instead, you can check out this Youtube video of us describing our birth story. There's even some behind the scenes footage from labor and inside the delivery room!
