• Last night, the Tuscaloosa City Council voted unanimously to authorize City Finance Director Mike Wright to create a draft to spend $320,000 at the junction of University Boulevard East and 25th Avenue East as well as paying Juanita Drive residents $35,000 for the acquisition of property that would help with progression of the Tuscaloosa Forward rebuilding plan.

 

  • In state news, Attorney General Luther Strange says a multi-state agreement with major tobacco companies ensures continued funding for public health programs. Over the years, Alabama has received nearly $1 billion for health care programs because of the agreement.

 

  • President Obama is expected to outline steps his administration will take to tighten gun restrictions in the wake of the Connecticut school shooting. However, he is not expected to call for specific measures, but he will ask Vice President Joe Biden to lead the effort. 

 

  • A former security guard in California has been arrested after allegely firing 54 shots outside a mall. He's been charged with assault because a mother and her 4-year-old daughter were knocked down and injured as they fled.
