There is officially a new spelling bee champion in the United States. Zaila Avant-garde, a 14-year-old from Louisiana, won the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
According to a tweet from the Scripps National Spelling Bee account, Avant-garde tied for 370th place back in 2019 before winning this year's title. They tweeted a picture of a smiling Avant-garde holding the trophy with the caption, "It was the smile and twirls for us! After tying for 370th place in 2019, #Speller133 Zaila Avant-garde wins the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee. Congrats to all of our spellers. We're proud of everyone's poise and courage in facing the dictionary. #SpellingBee #TheBeeIsBack."
According to CNN, Zaila Avant-garde is the first African American contestant to win in 93 editions of the competition. Her winning word was something that I know I would've misspelled. It was murraya which is a type of tree.
As if being the National Spelling Bee champion isn't enough, Zaila Avant-garde is also pretty good on the basketball court. I came across a tweet highlighting her skills on the basketball court. It also turns out, she holds a Guinness World Record! Check out some videos of her basketball skills.
Winning any trophy isn't an easy thing to do, it takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and time. We're sending a huge congratulations to Zaila Avant-garde for winning the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
