I thought I had visited every public park in Tuscaloosa and Northport, but I was wrong. I was able to walk around a small portion of the 33 acre park Tuesday. It's quite beautiful and is filled with freshwater ponds and protected swamplands. You can walk through lovely nature trails and take in the scenery, and that's not all.

Van de Graaf Park includes a historic iron bridge. Here's more from the official Visit Tuscaloosa website:

The hidden gem held within the park is the reused 1882 King Bowstring Bridge. Once used to cross the Black Warrior, it was closed in 1896 to slowly disappear from the area until it was reclaimed for the park. With porch-style swings and the surreal look of the historic bridge over the creek, it’s surely the latest picturesque place to picnic.

There's also a suspension bridge that's super fun to cross, and primitive camping sites are available.

Van de Graaf Arboretum and Historic Bridge Park is located off Airport Road in Northport and is open from 6 a.m. until dark daily.
