This Tuscaloosa Park Is A Walkers Paradise
I have been having a blast exploring all that West Alabama has to offer. I spent 14 years in Birmingham, Alabama, and have been living in Tuscaloosa since the summer of 2019. It’s been exciting to learn more about West Alabama, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since I haven’t been walking on a treadmill or going swimming for my light exercises, I’ve been trying to locate places to enjoy some great walking. I found another great park that I just have to share with you. If you are a walker, you must check out Annette N. Shelby Park, located at 1614 15th St, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401. This walking paradise was super clean; folks were practicing social distancing, super comfy benches along the walking path, and there was great parking. It is such a cute park, and this is a walker’s paradise because the walking trails are pretty level and free of debris. I can’t wait to go back and get my walk on!
I dug up some history on this park, and apparently, it is named for Annette N. Shelby, who is the wife of Alabama U.S. Senator Richard Shelby. [Amazing, I love parks with some history to it] According to the Encyclopedia of Alabama, “while in law school, Shelby served as a law clerk for Alabama Supreme Court justice James S. Coleman. During this time, he married Annette Nevin of Kinston, Coffee County; the couple would have two children. Annette Shelby was the first woman to become a tenured full professor at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business.” Next time I go walking at Annette N. Shelby Park, I will walk with some more pep in my step, since I know more about the history of the park and its name.
