Tuscaloosa Public Library recently announced that they will now be fine-free. Turning in items a few days late will no longer result in a late fee.

In a post on Twitter, Tuscaloosa Public Library declared they will now be fine-free. "Tuscaloosa Public Library is happy to announce that we’ve gone FINE FREE! We’ve got a great selection of materials and now you don’t have to worry if you turn those items in a few days late," TPL posted.

In an effort to ensure that everyone in the community has access to their resources, TPL will no longer charge a late fee for materials returned a few days late.

On their website, TPL gave a quick rundown on what being fine-free means for members of the community:

  • TPL no longer charges overdue fines for materials returned after their due date.
  • All outstanding overdue fines have been waived from your account.
  • Materials not returned in a timely manner will still be billed to your account, and you will not be able to check out additional materials.
  • Once the items are returned, the charges are removed from your account and you are free to check out materials. No fines!

There will still be a fee for items considered "lost." Once an item is charged to your account, borrowing privileges will be suspended until the item is returned or paid for. If the item is returned after you were charged for a "lost" item the fee will be removed from your account and borrowing privileges will be restored.

Library materials will still have a due date. Items not returned by their due date will still be considered overdue.
