Tuscaloosa, Alabama Links to Host Breast Cancer Awareness Events
A nationwide organization, The Links, Incorporated, “is one of the nation’s oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of extraordinary women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry,” according to their website.
This October, The Tuscaloosa Alabama Links Chapter will host two Breast Cancer awareness educational events, “Links in Pink.” In addition, the group will support the DCH Manderson Cancer Center by distributing free breast screening flyers in the West Tuscaloosa community.
“Breast Cancer Awareness is important to the Links because Black women in the United States have the second highest incidence of Breast Cancer, with a 12% lifetime risk of Breast Cancer,” said Charmaine Morrow Walton, President, Tuscaloosa Chapter of The Links, Incorporated.
The first event will be on October 6th at 6 p.m. at the McDonald Hughes Community Center, 3101 MLK Jr Blvd., Tuscaloosa, AL 35401.
According to the press release, “the Guest Speaker, Mrs. Erin Harris-Hodges, a Nurse Practitioner, will speak on Breast Cancer Causes and Symptoms, and the incidence in African-American women. A Cancer Survivor will share her cancer journey with Breast Cancer.”
In addition to the education and insight provided at the session, the Links will have pink bracelets and handouts about mammograms and early detection. Click here to register for this event.
