Free Family Event in Tuscaloosa Honors Black Children’s Book Week
The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Eta Xi Omega Chapter of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is hosting a free family event to honor Black Children’s Book Week this Saturday, February 28, 2026, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Tuscaloosa Public Library – Weaver Bolden Branch located at 2522 Lanier Ave, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401. The event is free and open to the public.
“This celebration is designed to uplift Black children, promote literacy, and celebrate representation in books and children’s media,” said the press release. “Families can enjoy children’s authors, bookmark decorating, face painting, and a fun coloring station, all in a welcoming community space.”
The goal of the event is to create an atmosphere where every child feels seen, inspired, and excited to turn the page on their own literary journey. Several African American children's book authors will showcase their work. Click here to follow the Eta Xi Omega Facebook Page for more info.

“I am truly excited to be a part of this event because representation matters. Not only as an author but also as an educator, I understand how powerful it is when children see authors, characters, and stories that reflect who they are and where they come from,” said Dr. Shanté Morton, author. “It builds confidence, strengthens identity, and nurtures a genuine love for reading. Events like this create space for our children to feel seen, valued, and inspired.”
