Tuscaloosa Enjoys Its First Autism Speaks Fun Day 

Burgers on the grill, kids having water balloon fights, and great music for a good cause. It's safe to say autism Speaks Fun Day was a huge success!

Saturday, April 17th, 2021 at Jaycee Fairgrounds,  Tuscaloosa had it's inaugural Autism Speaks Fun Day. The event was hosted by a Tuscaloosa native, Tiffany Willams, who happens to be raising two autistic children. The day was filled with laughter, free food, drinks, a bounce house, music by 105.1 The Block, and lots of love! Thanks to TC Photography for capturing some great moments at the event!

After speaking with Tiffany, it's obvious that raising awareness about autism is very important to her. When asked about her inspiration for the event Tiffany said, "My inspiration is that I have two boys with autism. It's very personal to me. My life revolves around them. I never knew love like this. I wouldn’t trade it for nothing."

I can only imagine the amount of love she's poured into her two boys. Their 12 and 14 and love to play and have fun like any other kids. You should've seen them launching water balloons at the park. If I wasn't on the turntables playing music, I would've joined in. They were having too much fun!

When asked about one of the biggest lessons she's been taught while raising children with Autism, she said it's to "be more patient and understanding."

According to Autism Speaks, Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a broad range of conditions is characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 54 children in the United States. With April being Autism Awareness month, it's important that we all do some research and learn more about this disorder.

Tiffany hopes to continue to build this event for years to come so we can keep celebrating these kids and raise awareness for Autism. Tiffany's encouraging words to parents raising children with Autism is, "Keep the faith and remember it could be worse. Stay current with autism activities and believe in your child."
