The Tuscaloosa County Branch of the NAACP is gearing up for another great series of Juneteenth events for 2026 to celebrate freedom, history, and culture.

"Each year, Juneteenth reminds us that freedom is not just a moment in history but a continuing journey,” said Lisa Young, President, Tuscaloosa County Branch of the NAACP.  “As we gather to celebrate, we honor the resilience, achievements, and contributions of those who have paved the way while inspiring future generations to continue building a stronger, more equitable community.”

Living Legend Luncheon

The Living Legend Luncheon will be held on Friday, June 19, at noon at Shelton State Community College’s C.A. Fredd Campus, located at 3401 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401.

The luncheon will also feature the 2026 Living Legend, Ms. Sarah "Sue" Thompson. She is being honored for her unwavering commitment to public education, school desegregation, and teacher representation, which has left an indelible mark on Tuscaloosa and beyond.

Juneteenth Parade

The Juneteenth Community Parade will be held on Saturday, June 20. Participants should arrive for the lineup at 9 a.m. at Westlawn Middle School, located at 1715 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401.

The parade will begin promptly at 10 a.m. and will travel through west Tuscaloosa. The community celebration will feature local organizations, community groups, and marching bands.

For 2026, there will be two Grand Marshals for the parade. Donna Foster is a leader, servant, and advocate with a legacy of service. Also, Jared White is a youth leader, scholar, and servant with a future full of promise.

Juneteenth Community Day Celebration

The community day celebrating Juneteenth has been moved due to extreme heat, to ensure the safety and comfort of attendees, to the McDonald Hughes Community Center located at 3101 Martin Luther King Blvd, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401. The festivities kick off at noon and last until 4 p.m.

According to the press release, the “free family event will feature live entertainment, food vendors, community organizations, and activities for children and families with fellowship and celebration of culture and heritage.”

Young said, “The Tuscaloosa County Branch of the NAACP looks forward to celebrating with the people of Tuscaloosa during this special time of remembrance, reflection, and fellowship."
