The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit is investigating after two young women were shot at High Country Apartments Tuesday night, its assistant commander said Wednesday.

Captain Kip Hart said the two women, who are 16 and 24, were taken to DCH Regional Medical Center around 8 p.m. Tuesday night after a fight at High County Apartments on East McFarland Boulevard led to gunfire and both were wounded.

Hard said the 16-year-old was leaving the complex in her car when a bullet struck her in the head as she drove away. The 24-year-old was looking out the window of an apartment to investigate the commotion and was shot in the chest, Hart said.

Hart said it currently appears that neither woman's wounds are life-threatening and they remain at DCH for treatment.

The VCU is interviewing witnesses to identify those involved and more details will be released as they are available, Hart said.
