UA's First Black Student-Led Magazine Launches This Weekend
College days are some of the best days of some people's lives. It's amazing that this magazine will be part of those memories for students at UA.
Sunday, April 25th, from 3p-5p 105.1 The Block will be broadcasting live from the University of Alabama. It's the 1956 Magazine Launch Party! It's all happening in the university's Intercultural Diversity Center. Yours truly, The Big Dawg DreDay, will be mixing live so you know it's a party.
The event will have food, drinks, a photo booth, and more. It's the celebration of the magazine's first-ever printed issue. The magazine was founded by UA Student Tiona Taite. How cool is that? It's already groundbreaking that this is the university's first black student-led magazine. This print issue is just more reason to celebrate. As a product of an HBCU, I can appreciate when black students are represented at institutions.
I spoke with a Contributing Writer of the magazine to see how it feels to be a part of such a historic organization.
"Being a part of UA’s first Black student-led magazine has been an unbelievable experience for me, not just as a journalist but also as a young Black woman. Tionna has been amazing to work with and her story is truly inspiring. I'm so excited for the launch party and I can't wait to celebrate the beautiful work myself and our wonderful team have worked so hard to create all year. I think 1956 magazine is going to continue to get bigger and better with more beautiful stories to tell about black culture."
