Tuscaloosa's popular shoe store Wagner's RunWalk is on the move as they plan to leave Midtown Village and relocate downtown later this year.

In a post on Instagram, store managers said they plan to set up shop in the Downtown Plaza at University Boulevard and Queen City Boulevard in March.

"We're excited about moving to the downtown area partially because it takes us back to our beginnings," general manager Kendall Thompson told the Tuscaloosa Thread. "The first Wagner's shoes location opened downtown in 1953, just 3 blocks from our new location."

Wagner's is Tuscaloosa's only specialty running store serving most of West Alabama and East Mississippi. It opened its doors in Midtown back in 2007 as The Athlete's Foot. In 2010, the decision was made to drop the Athlete's Foot franchise and become Wagner's.

Thompson said another major reason for the move downtown is because that area is just better suited for walkers and runners than Midtown Village, McFarland Boulevard and 15th Street.

"Being a running focused store, we look forward to hosting group runs now with many more route opportunities in the area," Thompson said.

Thompson said she hopes to be moved into the new location in time for the Tuscaloosa Half Marathon, which takes place on March 27th.
