Dangerous Heat: What West Alabama Residents Should Know

Alabama residents should stay weather-aware this week because of the threat of multiple days of dangerous heat. The National Weather Service in Birmingham said that the “most persistent heat will be in western and southern portions of Central Alabama.”

“Isolated afternoon thunderstorms will remain in the forecast through Thursday, especially south of I-20,” said the National Weather Service in Birmingham. “More organized rain chances will increase closer to the weekend, as a series of disturbances moves through the region.

Precautionary & Preparedness Actions from the NWS

• Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
• Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing when possible, and drink plenty of water.
• To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.  Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911.
