Flood Concerns Grow as 3-7 Inches of Rain Forecasted for Portions of Alabama
West Alabama residents can expect a stretch of wet weather this week, bringing multiple rounds of rain and the potential for heavy downpours at times.
Yesterday (Sunday, June 14), while driving from Birmingham to Tuscaloosa on 20/59, I got caught in one of those “heavy downpours” forecasters have been warning about. The rain came down in sheets, making for a tense drive with limited visibility, where other drivers turned on their hazards.
Now, predicted widespread rainfall totals have increased to 3 to 7 inches over the next week, with some areas potentially receiving higher amounts.

Monday
“Periods of rain are likely today, mainly over the southern half of the state,” said James Spann, Alabama Weather Network Chief Meteorologist.
Tuesday and Wednesday
“Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are likely tomorrow and Wednesday as a stalled surface front remains over North Alabama,” said Spann. “Understand it won't rain all day both days, and you should see a few peeks of sun.”
Thursday and Friday
Spann said, “The most widespread rain will likely come Thursday and Friday as another front drifts into the Deep South. Deep tropical moisture will be in place ahead of the boundary, and the rain could be heavy at times.”
Is There the Potential for Flooding?
The short answer is yes. The Townsquare Media Weather Center will continue to track the influx of rain and the possibility of flooding.
The National Weather Service in Birmingham said that as it gets closer to mid-week, they “will be looking closely at this guidance for the potential for flooding and resulting watches.”
