West Blocton (1-3) beat Sipsey Valley (1-2) in a thrilling game 18-14. West Blocton came into this game without a win but with the help of their rushing attack, they were able to put a check in the win column.

Both teams came out in the first quarter unable to move the ball, with both teams punting the ball back-and-forth.

In the second quarter West Blocton took its first drive of the quarter all the way to the goal line with help of sophomore running back Nate Barron and senior running back Jaxon Lightsey. Lightsey finished the drive off with a 3-yard rushing touchdown putting the Tigers up first.

Sipsey Valley responded on its next drive with a 40-yard pass from sophomore quarterback LJ Cormier to junior receiver Wyatt Bailey putting the Bears in the opponents 9-yard line. The Bears finished the drive the next play with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Cormier to Bailey. Sipsey Valley made the extra point putting them in the lead with 1:50 left in the second quarter.

West Blocton came back with a 34-yard rush by freshman quarterback Trey Lawley bringing the Tigers to the opponent’s 46-yard line. A couple plays later Lawley connected with freshman running back Cooper Deerman for a 18-yard pass bringing the Tigers offense to the 9-yard line. With a couple seconds left on the clock in the second quarter the Tigers finished its drive with a 9-yard passing touchdown from Lawley to sophomore receiver Tyseon Smith.

The Tigers were unable to make the two-point conversion and went into halftime ahead of Sipsey Valley 12-7.

West Blocton received the second half kickoff, and on the Tigers first drive junior Eugene Taylor intercepted Lawley’s pass on Sipsey’s Valley own 12-yard line.

The Bears capitalized on the interception with an 88-yard touchdown pass from Cormier to Bailey. Putting the Bears back in the lead 14-12 with 7:52 left in the third quarter.

Both teams spent most of the third quarter punting the ball back and forth until the last few minutes of the third quarter when the Tigers with the help of Lightsey ran the ball all the way to opponents 4-yard line.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter Lightsey finished the drive with a 4-yard rushing touchdown, bringing West Blocton back in the lead 18-14 with 11:33 left in the fourth quarter. Lightsey finished that drive with five carries for 29 yards.

Both teams spent most of the fourth quarter not being able to move the ball. The Bears had a chance to take the lead back with four minutes left in the fourth quarter. With the ball at the opponents 21-yard line Sipsey Valley threw the game sealing interception to West Blocton defense. The defense ran the interception all the way to the opponent’s 38-yard line.

West Blocton spent the remaining time running the ball to run the time down. At one minute left in the game Lawley took a knee to seal the Tigers first win of the season.

“We are so young and injuries have really hurt us this year so for these guys to get a taste of a win is big for us”, West Blocton’s first year head coach Dre’Mail King says.

“Credit to West Blocton they’re a much better team than the record shows” Sipsey Valley’s first year head coach Joey Milligan said, “We will just go back to work and get better.”

Sipsey valley goes on the road next week to play Bibb County, and West Blocton will go back home to play Montevallo.
