WTUG Remembers Marvin Gaye On His Birthday

Do you remember what you were doing in 1984 on April !st when the news first came out that Marvin Gaye had died?

I remember I was in Brooklyn, on the bunk bed talking to my brother when my Mom went pass our room crying.  I asked what was wrong and she said Marvin Gaye was dead then what she said next blew my mind! He was killed by his father! I thought is was an April Fools joke!

Marvin Pentz Gaye Jr. born April 2, 1939 died less than 12 hours before he would turn 45.

At 12:38 p.m. (PST) on April 1, 1984, Marvin Gaye Jr and his father had been involved in a physical altercation when Gaye intervened in a fight between his parents. While Gaye was in his bedroom, his father shot him in the heart and then in his left shoulder. Gaye was pronounced dead at 1:01 p.m. (PST) after his body arrived at California Hospital Medical Center, hours before turning 45.

After Gaye's funeral, his body was cremated and his ashes were later scattered into the Pacific Ocean. Initially his father was charged with first-degree murder,his charges dropped to voluntary manslaughter following a diagnosis of a brain tumor. Marvin Gay Sr. was later sentenced to a suspended six-year sentence and probation. He died at a nursing home in 1998.
