What happens when a collection agency sues you for a debt you don’t owe? In this case it cost them nearly $83 million dollars. Yes $83 million dollars. What a payday!

Maria Guadalupe Mejia was awarded $82,990.000 when a Jackson County Missouri jury ordered Portfolio Recovery Associates LLC for violating the Fair Debt and Collection Practices Act.

The collection company sought her out in February 2013 for a little over a $1,000 that she said she didn’t owe. She said and her husband struggling and it terrified her when the collection agency came after her.

According to nydailynews.com the agency meant to pursue a man with a similar-sounding name.  Man, did they make a very expensive mistake.
