‘Stand Strong Day’ In T-Town

Bullying victim
Digital Vision

It’s horrible to think that bullying has become a problem in our schools but it is a serious problem and needs not be ignored.

Mayor Walt Maddox has declared today, February 25th as ‘Stand Strong Day’ in Tuscaloosa. The announcement comes courtesy of a partnership between the University of Alabama Bateman Team and the Tuscaloosa City Schools’ Halt program.

‘Halt’ is a task force organized to develop a district-wide approach to bully-proofing our schools. Together with the Alabama Bateman Team, they are encouraging the community to put a stop to bullying.

Bullying is described as unwanted, aggressive behavior that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior can include verbal harassment, physical assault or coercion and may be directed repeatedly towards particular victims.

While the more traditional forms of bullying exist, cyberbulling is also becoming a widespread problem. According to StopBullying.gov, cyberbullying is bullying that takes place using electronic technology. These commonly happen through text messages or on Facebook or Twitter.

If you’d like to learn more about the ‘I Can’ campaign, please visit the Tuscaloosa City Schools website or click here.

Let’s join together today and make Tuscalooa a “bully-free” zone! Tonight, take a few minutes to talk to your kids about bullying. For tips on how to do that, go here.
