18-Year-Old Charged with Murder After Sunday Night Shooting

An 18-year-old man has been charged with murder after a Sunday night shooting claimed the life of a Tuscaloosa man.

Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the multi-agency Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, said police believe that the suspect, Nathaniel Patton, was at Winston’s convenience store on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard when he drew a handgun and opened fire on two people there.

One victim, 20-year-old Dominic Coleman, was struck and killed instantly. Kennedy said the second person was not hit and was able to return fire with his own weapon.

The suspect, Patton, was shot one time in the exchange of gunfire.

Kennedy said Patton was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening then taken to the Tuscaloosa County Jail, where he was charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder.

He remained there Monday afternoon on a combined bond of $210,000.
