Alabama basketball secured its first commitment of the 2023 class over the weekend in 4-star forward Sam Walters. The 6-foot-8 forward out of The Villages, Florida is considered the No. 11 prospect in the out of the state and the No. 94 prospect in his class by 247Sports.

Crimson Tide assistant coach Antoine Pettway served as his lead recruiter and extended him a scholarship offer in April of this year. Walters was eager to commit to the Tide, sealing his commitment to Alabama during his official visit to Tuscaloosa last week.

Walters chooses Alabama over scholarship offers from Georgetown, LSU, Florida and several others.

Nate Oats secured the No. 5 overall recruiting class in 2022 and Walters gives the Crimson Tide its first commitment of the new class. His commitment gives Alabama the No. 20 overall class in the early stages of this recruiting cycle.

"I'm really excited, the vision they have for me was great. I feel like the system fits me really well. Being able to shoot and use the abilities that I feel like I have to show that out there. I feel like that was a perfect fit for me, so I'm really excited," said Walters at the Pangos All-American Camp.

Oats and his staff can boast three NBA Draft picks during his tenure with the Crimson Tide in Kira Lewis, Joshua Primo and Herb Jones. The current regime can add two more to that tally should JD Davison and Keon Ellis receive selections in this month's draft. With a strong track record brewing, Oats has turned Tuscaloosa into an attractive place for basketball's top prospects.
