With the arrival of the meteorological spring season, which runs from March 1 through May 31, it also marks the start of our region’s spring severe weather season.

The Townsquare Media Weather Center is closely monitoring conditions that will bring a severe weather threat to Texas and portions of the Midwest on Thursday and Friday.

Headed into the weekend, strong to severe storms are possible across several states in the southern region, including Alabama, and into portions of the Carolinas, Tennessee, and northward.

The Storm Prediction Center has introduced a “Marginal Risk” of severe storms for Saturday, March 7.

Currently, the entire West and Central Alabama counties are under this “Marginal Risk” zone. This includes the entire Townsquare Media coverage area, which includes West Alabama counties of Bibb, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Perry, Pickens, Sumter, Tuscaloosa, and Walker.

The current timeline for these severe storms should bring them into our area late Saturday afternoon, ahead of a cold front.

With this threat, the potential hazards are “damaging straight-line wind gusts up to 60 mph,” said the National Weather Service in Birmingham.

“Severe weather parameters are not really impressive with meager instability and weakening upper support, but as always, we will watch any storms closely,” said James Spann, Alabama Weather Network and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist.

Severe Weather Safety Tips

It’s always a great idea to refresh your memory on the locations of your severe weather safe places for your home, work, and other places you frequent.

Knowing your safe place in advance can help you when you must move there quickly.

Here is my advice: go to the lowest level, an interior room, away from windows, and put walls between you and the outside. Also, avoid rooms with large windows, manufactured homes, being in vehicles, and being outdoors during severe weather threats.
