Alabama Senate Passes Nation’s Strictest Abortion Ban
The Alabama Senate overwhelmingly approved a bill that would make it a felony for a doctor to perform an abortion. After several hours of debate, the Senate approved the bill 25-6 last night. Exemptions for victims of rape and incest were removed from the bill, making Alabama's abortion ban the strictest in the nation.
Any doctor who performs an abortion could face up to 99 years in prison. Abortions may only be legally performed if the mother's life is in immediate danger.
The bill now heads to Alabama Governor Kay Ivey to be signed into law.
