Thursday Quick Weather Highlights – What to Expect

    Due to the moderate to heavy rainfall, there is a “dangerous flood threat” for a large portion of Alabama for Thursday and Friday, including all West Alabama counties.

    Bibb: Moderate Risk

    Fayette: Slight Risk

    Greene: Slight Risk with a Small Portion Under Moderate Risk

    Hale: Moderate Risk

    Lamar: Slight Risk

    Perry: Moderate Risk

    Pickens: Slight Risk

    Sumter: Slight Risk

    Tuscaloosa: Slight Risk with a Small Portion Under Moderate Risk

    In addition, a Flood Watch is in effect until Friday, June 19, at 7 p.m. This includes the following West Alabama Counties: Bibb, Greene, Hale, Perry, Pickens, Sumter, and Tuscaloosa.

    Severe Weather Thursday Outlook

    The Storm Prediction Center has the West Alabama region under a “Marginal Risk,” a level 1 out of 5 for severe weather.

    The current timing for active weather is from “5 a.m. until 10 p.m.,” said the National Weather Service in Birmingham.

    The main threats (in addition to the flooding concerns) are for “damaging winds with gusts up to 60 mph and isolated, brief tornadoes.”

    James Spann, Alabama Weather Network Chief Meteorologist, said that the “Highest risk of a few isolated tornadoes will come this afternoon and early tonight, when instability values are highest.”

    “A few isolated tornadoes are possible today over South Alabama, mainly south of U.S. 80 (Demopolis to Selma to Montgomery to Opelika),” said Spann.

    Friday Overview

    For Friday, June 19, there is the continuation of the “Flood Watch.” Also, there is a “Marginal Risk” for strong to severe storms during the “morning and afternoon” timeframe for “damaging winds with gusts up to 60 mph,” said the National Weather Service in Birmingham.
