Hurricane Season is Less Than 30 Days Away, Here's What to Expect

We are in our last month of severe weather season and that means hurricane season is right around the corner. Even though West Alabama is far inland from our beautiful Gulf Coast, we still keep tabs on the season. It runs from June 1 through November 30.

As Alabamians, we know that hurricane season is an unavoidable reality of living in this region. These powerful storms can travel inland with damaging winds, influx of rain amounts, severe weather threats, and more.

2023 Hurricane Season Prediction

Colorado State University said that they “anticipate that the 2023 Atlantic basin hurricane season will have slightly below-average activity.” In addition, they are predicting that the 2023 Hurricane season will include “13 named storms, 55 named storm days, 6 hurricanes, 25 hurricane days, 2 major hurricanes, and 5 major hurricane days.”

The Weather Channel is forecasting “15 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.” Also, they mentioned that this “hurricane season outlook is more challenging than usual” because of a “developing El Nino vs. the warm Atlantic Ocean.”

Staying aware and being prepared are key components to every hurricane season regardless of the forecasted outlook and location. We know that hurricanes pose a threat to those close to the beach but at times those hazards can reach far inland.

In comparison, the 2022 hurricane season was predicted to be “above-normal activity.” As reported by Colorado State University at that time of their 2022 report there were “current weak La Niña conditions.”
