The Alabama Crimson Tide is finalizing a deal to hire a new tight ends coach, with Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports reporting that the Crimson Tide is targeting Louisville offensive line coach Richard Owens to be the Crimson Tide's new tight ends coach.

Owens, a 45-year-old originally from Middleburg, Florida, played college football with the Louisville Cardinals from 1999 to 2003. He went undrafted in the 2004 NFL draft, but played two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and one season with the St. Louis Rams.

 

He began his coaching career with the Arkansas Razorbacks in 2010 as a graduate assistant before becoming the tight ends coach at UAB in 2012. He spent one season as the Blazers offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach in 2013 before moving back to coaching tight ends in 2014. In 2015, he went to South Alabama, where he spent three seasons with the Jaguars as the tight ends coach (2015) and the offensive line coach (2016 and 2017).

 

He spent one season at Louisville as the Cardinals' tight ends coach before returning to UAB as the offensive line coach from 2019-2021. He was the offensive line coach at Georgia Southern in 2022 before returning to Louisville in 2023 to become the offensive line coach. Now, he will join Alabama as the tight ends coach under head coach Kalen DeBoer.
