SWEET HOME ALABAMA!

Only a few states have the honor of a legendary song written about them. There's no "Sweet Home Mississippi" or "Sweet Home Florida." Yet, in 1974, the boys known as "Lynyrd Skynyrd" released an album called "Second Helping". It was only the second album from the incredible Southern rock band. It was on Side 1, track 1. Those first guitar chords begin, and everyone knows the name of the song. Of course, it was written in response to Neil Young's "Southern Man". The band felt it blamed the South for all of slavery.

So, that was how they responded to Mr. Young. "A southern man don't need him around anyhow".  This leads us to some cool (and pretty big) news about Alabama. Seven sites and groups in Alabama have been named to the Smithsonian's list of "250 (that number is a theme this year) Places That Symbolize Our Nation's History & Culture". As mentioned, 250 is the number of the year as we celebrate our country's special birthday.

Those who made this important list highlighting our state include:

RICKWOOD FIELD in Birmingham

CIVIL RIGHTS TRAIL in Birmingham

HELEN KELLER BIRTHPLACE in Tuscumbia

MUSCLE SHOALS

The TUSKEGEE AIRMEN

The UNCLAIMED BAGGAGE CENTER in Scottsboro

USS ALABAMA in Mobile

It's hard to argue with any place or group on this list of the most iconic in Alabama. Some of them I've been fortunate enough to have visited, but this list makes me want to visit (especially the "unclaimed baggage center") a few that I've never seen in person. It looks like there are some great deals at the Unclaimed Baggage Center.
