In just a few weeks, students across West Alabama will go back to school, but "Back to School" isn't just for Kids anymore. There’s something about August that makes life feel like it’s starting over.

School buses return, football season kicks off, some churches have a dedicated season of daily corporate prayer as we return to regular school and work schedules, and calendars begin filling up after the slower pace of summer. Even if your school days are long behind you, this time of year has a way of inspiring a fresh start.
Psychologists call it the “fresh start effect.” While New Year’s Day gets most of the attention, major seasonal milestones, like the beginning of a new school year, can motivate people to reset goals, build healthier habits, and tackle projects they’ve been putting off.
For many, August is the perfect time to reestablish routines. Earlier mornings, organized schedules, and consistent meal planning can reduce stress and create a greater sense of balance. It’s also an ideal season to learn something new, whether that’s taking an online class, reading more books, improving a hobby, or finally starting that home project you’ve been meaning to finish.
Back-to-school season also brings communities back together. Friday night football, church activities, neighborhood events, and local festivals all help reconnect us after summer vacations.
The truth is, fresh starts aren’t limited to January. August offers another opportunity to look ahead, make meaningful changes, and finish the year strong.
Whether you’re packing backpacks, preparing for a busy season at work, or simply looking for a reason to reset, August serves as a reminder that it’s never too late to begin again.
