Publix Expands Frozen Berry Recall in Alabama

Alabama shoppers are being urged to check their freezers after Publix expanded a recall of certain GreenWise frozen berries because of a possible E. coli contamination.

The expanded recall includes all lots of GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries and GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries sold at Publix stores in Alabama, along with stores in Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. The move follows an ongoing federal investigation into a multistate E. coli O145:H28 outbreak.

The recalled products include:

* GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries (10-ounce and 48-ounce bags)
* GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries (10-ounce and 48-ounce bags)

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, consumers should not eat the recalled berries. Instead, they should throw them away or return them to Publix for a full refund. Anyone who transferred the berries into another container and cannot identify them is also advised to discard the product.

Health officials say E. coli infections can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea and vomiting. Young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems face a greater risk of serious complications. As of the latest update, 12 illnesses and four hospitalizations have been linked to the outbreak.
