JAY-Z Talks Reconciling With Beyonce After His Infidelity: ‘Most People Walk Away’

In a very personal interview with New York TimesT Magazine, JAY-Z goes in-depth about some of the  issues he was dealing with in his marriage to Beyoncé.

When talking about his 4:44 album, where he detailed his infidelity and reconciliation with his wife on the title track, he explained why they stayed together after his transgressions.

“You know, most people walk away, and the divorce rate is like 50 percent or something ’cause most people can’t see themselves,” he said. “The hardest thing is seeing pain on someone’s face that you caused, and then have to deal with yourself.”

“I grew so much from the experience,” he continued. “But I think the most important thing I got is that everything is connected. Every emotion is connected and it comes from somewhere. And just being aware of it. Being aware of it in everyday life puts you at such a … you’re at such an advantage.”

JAY-Z added that he wasn’t surprised that Beyonce recorded her album Lemonade, where she details him cheating on her. He also confirmed the two have been working on a collaborative album.

“We were using our art almost like a therapy session. And we started making music together,” he said. “Lemonade was released first because it was closer to completion and he said it felt like “she should go first and share her truth.”

“The music she was making at that time was further along,” he continued. “So her album came out as opposed to the joint album that we were working on. Um, we still have a lot of that music. And this is what it became.”

“There was never a point where it was like, ‘I’m making this album.’ I was right there the entire time,” he added. “[We were] … both very, very uncomfortable, but […] the best place in the, you know, hurricane is like in the middle of it.”
