NASA’s Katherine Johnson (Made Famous in ‘Hidden Figures’) Dies at 101

“Give me my flowers while I yet live…”

That song is one that expresses a desire for appreciation while one lives rather than having reflections and memories spoken after one has died.  Sometimes, tributes are done just in the nick of time.

It is reported that Katherine Johnson, one of our most recently celebrated historical figures, died Monday morning at the age of 101. (Source.)

Johnson was one of the mathematicians who worked for NASA and aided in America’s first successful orbit around Earth. The lives and careers of Johnson and other Black women key features were depicted in the 2016 movie “Hidden Figures.”

In recent years, a greater push has been made to encourage young girls to move forward in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields; and this movie was successful in garnering the interest of young ladies with such passions.

We are grateful for the lives of Johnson and the other women who sought to break race and sex barriers, and we’re happy she was honored during her lifetime.  May Katherine Johnson rest in peace.
