A few months back, we reported on a proposed Checker's Restaurant possibly opening up in West End near the Stillman College campus. But now we have learned that it may no longer be coming to that area, after the Tuscaloosa Planning and Zoning Commission voted against it.

Many residents that live near the planned location expressed their concerns, by pointing out that the potential for heavy traffic and noise, far outweighed the benefits of having a new restaurant opening up near their neighborhood.. In addition, the Alabama Department of Transportation nixed a plan for developers to build an entrance to the Checkers, which one was one of the main focal points for its approval. However, with The ADOT rejecting that plan, any entrances or exits would have to be built alongside neighborhood streets instead of the larger Stillman Boulevard.

In any event, it looks like this new Checker's isn't going to happen. So, if you have to get your Checker's fix, it looks like you're going to have to continue to hit either the Checker's on McFarland Blvd. or the one on 15th Street.
