Officer Derek Chauvin Arrested in George Floyd’s Death
The officer involved in the death of George Floyd has been taken into custody. Source.
It's a case that has rocked race relations in the country! Former Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin held his knee on the neck of Floyd as he lay on the ground.
Chauvin was heard taunting Floyd, telling him to get into the vehicle, to stand up, and more while Floyd cried and made pleas for his life. He expressed that he couldn't breathe, that he was hurting, he even cried for his mother. Yet, he was granted no mercy.
As the video made its way across the nation, outrage built; but Chauvin, who is said to have had numerous complaints filed against him for misconduct, had no charges brought against him... Until now!
There were other officers involved in the case as they stood and watched Chauvin while keeping bystanders at bay. According to the Associated Press, Public Safety Commissioner John Harrington said state investigators arrested Derek Chauvin and that Chauvin was one of four officers fired this week.
Does this mean that racism has been eradicated? Of course not. Does it mean that there is no longer a need to fight against injustice? Not at all.
But what it does show is that elected officials in at least one US city are committed to making sure that one corrupt officer is brought to justice; and THAT is a step in the positive direction.
