The fan-favorite Texan-based convenience store chain Buc-ee's is opening a new location in Leeds, Alabama. The only other Alabama location is in Robertsdale.

Construction on the travel center began in June 2019, and there's a chance it could open before January. Leeds Mayor David Miller told AL.com that poor weather conditions set construction back, but the expected opening is in January.

The gas station has accumulated a cult following for its sheer size and the brand's beaver mascot. The Leeds location is to total 500,000 square feet and over 100 gas pumps.

The Buc-ee's will be built near the Outlet Shops at Grand River off exit 140 of I-20. The store will hire more than 200 workers with a salary starting at $13 per hour.

Buc-ee's is known by visitors for its clean restrooms and abundance of travel snacks, from beef jerky to banana pudding, and even merchandise. Chain founder Arch "Beaver" Aplin III describes the franchise as "the Disney of convenience stores."

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Buc-ee's has implemented various practices to protect the health of employees and customers at all of their locations. Employees are required to check their temperature upon arrival to work and practice safe distancing during their shifts. Buc-ee's has also increased shift numbers to allow the availability of more workers for sanitation purposes.

“In response to COVID-19, Buc-ee’s has enhanced its award-winning cleanliness and sanitation protocols by increasing the frequency of cleaning and adding a special sanitizing solution,” Jeff Nadalo, a spokesperson for Buc-ee's said in April. The company even makes its own sanitizing solution so the company is not having any issues or shortages.
