The Southeastern Conference Votes To Add Oklahoma and Texas

After a meeting held between Southeastern Conference presidents on Thursday, the SEC has voted to approve the additions of Oklahoma and Texas into the conference. The conference voted unanimously in favor of expanding the conference to 16 teams.

Last week at SEC Media Days 2021 the news was released that Texas and Oklahoma had been in contact with the SEC about potentially joining the league.

On Monday, both Texas and Oklahoma issued a joint statement to the Big 12 Conference that they would not be extending their grant of television rights beyond 2025.

Tuesday the two schools made a second joint statement asking to formally join the SEC.

"The University of Oklahoma and The University of Texas at Austin request invitations for membership to the Southeastern Conference starting on July 1, 2025. We believe that there would be mutual benefit to the Universities of the one hand, and the SEC on the other hand, for the Universities to become members of the SEC," wrote the presidents in a letter to the Southeastern Conference.

The Longhorns and Sooners are scheduled to enter the conference in 2025 however the schools could make the move earlier by buying out of their television rights agreement.

With the additions of Texas and Oklahoma the Alabama Crimson Tide will have an opportunity to improve its record against the two schools. The Tide currently has a losing record with both the Longhorns and Sooners with a combined record of 3-10-2 against the two schools.
