Next week, the trial of Rickey Crooks will begin. Crooks is charged with capital murder in the death of James Harry Johnson III after firing a shot from more than 400 yards away. Johnson was not an intended target but was allegedly struck by a stray bullet.

The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office says it will teach 10 area gun owners safety rules, the basics of loading and unloading a handgun, and firearm maintenance as part of a pilot program  to teach gun safety. More than 19,000 county residents are said to have permits to carry concealed pistols on their person.
