Tuscaloosa Woman Charged With Murder
A Tuscaloosa woman has been charged in the fatal shooting of a man found dead in his home Friday morning.
Kiara Monique Harton, 24, has been charged with murder in the shooting death of James Lester Stevenson, 51. Stevenson was found in his home off Unity Road, on 67th Avenue just before noon on Friday.
Harton confessed to shooting Stevenson during an argument on Thursday afternoon. According to Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit assistant commander Captain Kip Hart, Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s deputies were called to Stevenson's home to perform a welfare check after family members hadn’t heard from him in a few days.
After interviewing neighbors and examining video surveillance footage, Investigators were able to identify Harton as the prime suspect. Hart said, “Her statement and the evidence located at the scene all corroborated a series of events.” Hart also mentioned that Investigators recovered a gun which is believed to be the murder weapon.
Harton is currently being held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail with bond set at $150,000.
