A woman who told police she had been shot by an unknown assailant was actually the victim of her own negligence, investigators told local media Wednesday afternoon.

Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the multi-agency Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, said police officers were called to a condo complex on 48th Street East around 10 a.m. Wednesday, where a woman was suffering from a gunshot wound.

Kennedy said the woman was taken to DCH Regional Medical Center and treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, and the VCU responded to the hospital and alleged crime scene to take over the investigation.

Kennedy said the woman told police "she had been shot by unknown persons at an unknown location," but investigators eventually discovered physical evidence and other signs that indicated the victim was injured by her own negligent discharge of a firearm.

Kennedy said the VCU has closed the case on the original shooting, and police are determining now whether to charge the woman with Filing of a False Report, Obstruction of Government Operations or any other crime.

The Wednesday morning incident is not related to an earlier shooting after a bar fight in Temerson Square, the VCU said.
