Black History in the Making: Tonnie Jones

"Aliceville is so small, everybody knows everybody and has the nerve to have an undercover police. Be like 'Come on, Tonnie! We know that's you!' " comedian Chris "Smokey" Jones says in his standup act. Those from the area know exactly who he's talking about, although he's not undercover. Tonnie Jones is Aliceville's first black Chief of Police.

According to the Facebook page dedicated to his run for Pickens County Sheriff, Jones was first named as Chief of Police in 2007. In September of last year, he completed training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Since that time, he's worked a number of forensic cases in West Alabama while continuing to serve as Chief of Police.

Older brother of NFL Hall of Famer Walter Jones, greatness apparently runs in their family. They're proof that it matters not from where you come. What matters is where you see yourself going.
