It's no secret that the amount of violent crimes in Tuscaloosa has been on the rise within the last decade, especially when it comes to homicide.  In recent weeks/months, it has been suggested that the television show "The First 48" would soon come to Tuscaloosa, as they've already come to Birmingham.

Not to minimize how serious these situations are or to take attention away from the need for reform, but I just don't see that happening.

And before you jump down my throat about not taking things seriously, let me state WHY I don't see "The First 48" coming to Tuscaloosa.

  1. Here, everybody knows everybody, and when an altercation occurs, the involved parties are usually known, and a suspect is quickly identified.
  2. Crimes here are not committed by people who think they're going to get away with them. They're committed by people who don't care. Therefore, the suspects don't even try to go into hiding.

While looking into this whole topic, I came across some interesting FACTS:

  • In 2012, the city of Memphis, TN had 133 homicides, 20.23 per capita (per 100,000 people.
  • That same year, Birmingham had 67 homicides, or 31.42 per capita.
  • In Tuscaloosa, there were four homicides (4.3 per capita).

That's barely enough to create one episode per week for a month. Granted, that's still four homicides too many, but for these reasons, I just don't see "First 48" coming to Tuscaloosa..... Unless it's to pick up a story or two while they're in Birmingham. Right now, we definitely don't have enough content for the show to want to do a whole season.

Let's keep it that way!
