Two barges broke away from their tow and hit the John C. Stennis Lock & Dam in Columbus, MS over the weekend and one has now sank.

The barges broke loose from the Raymond D. Lucas Memorial Port in Clay County a little before 8 am on Saturday. The sunken barge was carrying soybeans and is now restricting some flow through the gates according to The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The other barge is empty and stable.

Engineers say the barges cannot be moved until water levels go down.
