3 Steps To Pick The Best Watermelon On #NationalWatermelonDay
I have already expressed my love of watermelon and making it the official flavor of summer. Well, today, we can celebrate watermelon in all its glory because August 3rd is National Watermelon Day. According to Punch Bowl, “there are around 300 different kinds of watermelons in the U.S. and Mexico. I had no idea. I’m going to have to start paying attention when I’m getting my next watermelon for the actual “type.” I do know that I like seedless watermelons. Also, I’ve had a yellow watermelon, and it was super sweet.
How do you know if you are getting a “good” watermelon? Most often, when you are in the grocery store, you will see people knocking on watermelons. I’m not sure what they are trying to hear, but my mother said the way to pick a watermelon is to the following:
- Pick a firm watermelon. Be sure to look it over for any dents or cuts.
- Make sure it is heavy for its size.
- Be sure the underside as a mark where it has been sitting on the ground.
I tend to pick up the smaller, personal-sized watermelons because it is easier to manage for me. However, according to Guinness World Records, “The heaviest watermelon weighes 159 kg (350.5 lb) and was grown by Chris Kent (USA) of Sevierville, Tennessee, USA, as verified by the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth on 4 October 2013.” So, I’ll stop complaining about carrying in a 5-pound watermelon.
There are many ways you can celebrate National Watermelon Day. I plan on having slices of watermelon for dessert tonight.
