In recent weeks, many have been speaking out and protesting racial injustice and police brutality. 'Black Lives Matter' murals have emerged all over the United States. We will soon be able to add Downtown Birmingham to that list.

According to ABC 33/40, a similar 'Black Lives Matter' mural to the one in Washing DC will be seen in Downtown Birmingham soon. A local artist confirmed the mural will be on 1st Ave S in front of RR park between 16th & 17th street in downtown Birmingham. the mayoral office has confirmed this project will be happening and is to be finished by Friday, June 19th on Juneteenth.

This is exciting news. The first place I remember having one was Washington DC. I've now seen these similar murals in Cincinnati, Albany, Brooklyn, and Charlotte. I love that the mural is to be finished on Juneteenth. Juneteenth is also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, as it marks the date the last slaves in the U.S. were freed, though the Emancipation Proclamation took effect on January 1, 1863. A full two and a half years later, slaves in Texas were notified of their freedom. Thus, the Juneteenth observance developed. What a cool way to celebrate Juneteenth. I've also been loving the sight of people being made aware of black history. It's going to be really powerful and emotional to visit that mural with my son Asè. Check out some of the other 'Black Lives Matter' murals from across the nation.
