A Tuscaloosa church will be handing out free boxes of produce and fresh fruit today thanks to the USDA Farmers to Family Food Box Program.

Saint John Baptist Church, located at 1709 Tenth Avenue, will be distributing the boxes to families from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. today. No ID is required to receive the boxes, and all are welcome to attend. The distribution will occur in the parking lot of the church.

The United States Department of Agriculture began the Farmers to Family Food Box Program to help Americans receive fresh food during the novel Coronavirus pandemic. The USDA is purchasing produce, fruit, meat, and dairy products from local farmers whose wares were originally intended to be sold to restaurants and bulk food distributors. Transportation agencies are then hired by the USDA to ship the food, and then it's given to those in need in our communities.

Nationwide, the USDA's Farmers to Families Food Box Program will begin to distribute over $1.2 billion in food products to those in need this week and is anticipated to spend $3 million weekly. The program is made possible by the Coronavirus Relief Act passed last month. Thank you to Congresswoman Terri Sewell, our 7th Congressional District United States Representative of for her work in getting this vital piece of legislation passed.

I think it's fantastic that this program has been started as a way to ensure that all our families have access to fresh and wholesome food during this difficult time. Read more about the Farmers to Families Food Box Program HERE.
