Events Highlight Black Maternal Health Week in Tuscaloosa
In recognition of Black Maternal Health Week (April 11–17), WAWC Healthcare is partnering with community organizations to host a series of meaningful events. The 2026 theme is “Rooted in Justice and Joy,” in which the initiative uplifts Black mothers by amplifying their voices, honoring their experiences, and advancing conversations on improved health outcomes through storytelling, dialogue, and community engagement.
“Centering Black mothers means listening, uplifting, and investing in their care, stories, and outcomes,” said Crystina Hughes, Founder and Executive Director of Diamonds for Doulas and Community Leader. “This week is about creating space for truth, healing, and change.”
Why This Matters
Across the United States, “Black women continue to experience disproportionately high rates of maternal morbidity and mortality,” said the press release.
Organizers said these events are open to the public and free. They are designed not only to raise awareness but also to foster actionable dialogue, amplify community voices, and support culturally responsive care solutions.
