The Tuscaloosa County Branch of the NAACP has canceled the Juneteenth Parade and Community Day Celebration for today, Saturday, June 20.

Before triggering the cancellation, leadership of the Tuscaloosa County Branch of the NAACP said in their press release that they consulted with the National Weather Service and took their own efforts to monitor incoming weather conditions.

“Due to the possibility of heavy thunderstorms and a likelihood of lightning, we believe it is in the best interest of our participants, volunteers, vendors, and community members to err on the side of caution,” said the press release.

“Safety First. Community Always.”

"While we were looking forward to celebrating Juneteenth together, the safety of our community must come first," said Lisa Young, president of the Tuscaloosa County Branch of the NAACP. "After careful consultation with weather officials and continued monitoring of conditions, we made the difficult decision to cancel today's events. Our guiding principle is simple: safety first, community always. We appreciate everyone's understanding and look forward to gathering again in the near future.”
